Recent Passport Changes

U.S. citizens now need a passport or other acceptable document to return from all foreign countries, including Mexico and Canada. Here’s what you need to know.

Besides the traditional passport book, travelers can get the smaller passport card.

The other option is an enhanced driver’s license.

Then there are “trusted traveler” passport cards, which get you faster access through customs and immigrations at the border check. SENTRI card is valid at the Mexico/U.S. border, and NEXUS works when returning from Canada.

But what do all of the above have in common? They’re only good for land and sea travel from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda.

Here’s the bottom line: the traditional passport is what you want and need. And don’t put it off until later—if you’re suddenly called to travel abroad for whatever reason, you may end up paying hefty fees for rush delivery. The sooner you start the application, the better.
