Avoiding Second Driver Charges

Want to find out how you can avoid rental car fees for extra drivers? Second driver charges on rental cars can vary widely by location and company, but are usually in the range of an extra $5-$10 per day. For longer rentals, this can really add up. If you’re renting with your spouse, try Avis, Budget, or Enterprise, which offer free driving privileges to the spouse of the renter.

Anyone, though, can join frequent renter programs at Hertz and National, which results in a free second driver for all rentals. Or, you might try saying you are “business associates,” which can get some companies to drop the fee, especially if you’re using a corporate account. Remember: if you do qualify for a waiver, it never hurts to have the company’s policy on hand.
