Travel Tip: Why Cheaper Jet Fuel Doesn’t Mean Cheaper Airfare

planeWith jet fuel being so low, does this mean you can expect lower airfares?

The answer: keep dreaming.

If you run the real numbers, you’ll discover that while the airlines will save billions of dollars this year on fuel, they will use much of that windfall to pay off debt and maybe even get some new planes.

Fuel has historically been the airlines’ single biggest expense.

While some airlines, such as Delta, expect to save $2 billion this year, it will also suffer losses.

Before fuel dropped so dramatically, many airlines, like Delta, tried to hedge their bets against rising fuel prices.

But no one saw the drop coming, and when fuel plunged, they ended up paying much higher prices. In Delta’s case, it resulted in a $712 million loss.

Fasten your seat belts, boys and girls. Airplane ticket prices will continue to climb.
