Every year, it seems like cruise lines build bigger and bigger ships to accommodate more passengers.

Carnival Corporation has ordered four new cruise ships that will hold record numbers: up to 6,600 passengers in each vessel. What we know right now is that two of those ships will be operated by AIDA, a European brand.

Royal Caribbean just completed what’s currently the world’s largest cruise ship. Harmony of the Seas carries 6,360 passengers, and will sail on her maiden voyage next year.

The runners-up in terms of size are also owned by Royal Caribbean: The Allure of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas, each weighing 225,000 tonnes.

But that doesn’t mean that mega-cruise ships are your only option. Plenty of lines are building smaller vessels.

The newest line, Viking Ocean Cruises, has begun sailing with ships that carry 930 passengers.

Windstar just christened its second new ship in a month. The Star Legend and the Star Breeze carry only 212 passengers each.
