European Rule 261 Explained

More than a year after the US Department of Transportation announced it was working on a Passenger Bill of Rights, it has still not been introduced.

But folks flying in or from Europe have been protected for many years when flights are delayed or cancelled. It’s called European Rule 261. And it applies to any airline flying from or within Europe, even American carriers.

If your flight is delayed by at least four hours, you’ll get up to 600 euros in cash.

It all depends on the length of the flight — under 930 miles, you’ll get 230 euros.

Up to 2,200 miles, you’ll get 400 euros, and over that length, 600 euros.

In the event you’re stuck overnight, you also get a hotel, meals, and telephone calls.

But don’t always expect airlines to volunteer your rights. You need to ask, or in some cases, politely demand.
