My husband and I just returned from a heartfelt journey through Italy as part of a Viking cruise that took us through Italy and Sicily. We were able to visit many destinations that our Italian grandparents spoke about when we were youngsters. I especially recall my grandmother telling me about her voyage on the ship out of Naples to join my grandfather in New York City, with her young son in tow and expecting another.

Our Viking tour brought us to a mountain high above Naples, and when I looked down on that scene, I was reminded of my grandmother and the courage it must have taken to leave one’s home and family to make a new life in America.
