Free hot breakfasts are a staple at many budget hotel chains across the U.S., but that morning perk is under pressure.

Driven by rising labor and food costs, several major chains are changing their morning menus. At many full-service Marriott properties, the trend is moving toward paid buffet models.

Holiday Inn seems to have a split identity. Full-service Holiday Inn hotels continue to charge for the hot breakfasts while Holiday Inn Express provides a free hot breakfast service at over three thousand locations.

And brands like Best Western continue to offer complimentary hot and cold buffets.

But since so many of these hotels are franchises, always check with the hotel directly to see if you can still eat free.
