REAL ID Deadline Delayed Again

Department of Homeland Security

Anyone remember the words REAL ID?

In the wake of 9/11, it was a law that required each of us — if we wanted to fly — to have a compliant state driver’s license that included our full legal name, signature, date of birth, gender, a unique identifying number, and a front-facing photo.

We were all supposed to have it by 2008.

And every year since then, the deadline has been extended. Most recently, the deadline was March 2025. Guess what? The deadline just got delayed again, and full enforcement might not even start until 2027.

Here’s the good news: while the government continues to kick the can down the road, if you already possess a valid U.S. passport, you may never need REAL ID.
