Eye on Travel
Eye on Travel — Terranea Resort — March 28, 2026
This week’s broadcast of Eye on Travel is from the Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. It’s the site of the former Marineland of the Pacific. When Marineland first opened in 1954, it was the world’s largest oceanarium. My mother took me there when I was seven, and it was an amazing experience with the sea life and the coast. I then was a fan of the TV series Sea Hunt, starring Lloyd Bridges as diver Mike Nelson, also filmed at Marineland. But in 1987, it closed forever, and the facility sat abandoned for years, until 2009, when the Terranea Resort was built in this prime location overlooking the Pacific. And this week, Peter has all the updates on the travel impacts of the war in Iran, the chaos at U.S. airports, and the latest on the investigation of the collision of the Air Canada jet and the New York Port Authority fire truck on the runway at New York’s LaGuardia, the first fatal accident at that airport in 34 years. Plus, Simon Calder, Travel Correspondent at The Independent, gives us a reality check on the status of global travel and the impact of Middle Eastern conflict on aviation. Dave Bader, Chief Operations and Education Officer at Marine Mammal Care Center, explains the balance of Southern California’s coastal biodiversity, the rescue of malnourished sea lion pups, and how the return of great white sharks is a win for the ecosystem. Then, Ralph Grippo, President of Terranea Resort, discusses the 17-year journey of building a coastal sanctuary to protect marine life, and why independent ownership is the secret to guest and staff loyalty. And a deep dive into the menu of the Terranea Resort with Andrew Vaughan, Executive Chef, covering everything from the rabbit braise to the wild success of spiny lobster caught right off the hotel’s shores. There’s all this and more on this edition of Eye on Travel.
