The Essentials

Most and Least Expensive Airports to Get Stuck In

The government shutdown may be over, but that doesn’t mean you won’t experience your share of flight delays and cancellations.

And when that happens, you’re probably going to make some purchases at the airport, like a snack, a beverage, or maybe a hotel room if the flight cancels.

But which airport you get stuck in will make a huge difference in what you’ll spend.

New research compared the cost of basic delay and cancellation expenses for travelers: a fast food meal, a cup of coffee, a toothbrush, public transportation into the city, and a one-night stay at a hotel.

And the most expensive airport to get stuck in? JFK at a whopping $324, followed by LAX at $257, which are even more expensive than Zurich, Sydney, or Madrid.

And the least expensive airports to get stuck in? They are all under $100. Delhi in India at less than $25. Bangkok Airport, which is $45. Sao Paulo in Brazil and Istanbul in Turkey are both under $90.
