Eye on Travel

Eye on Travel — Malta — May 24, 2025

This week’s broadcast of Eye on Travel is from all over the country of Malta. I have all the travel updates including the upcoming and controversial special election vote in Sitka, Alaska on Proposition 1, which would put a cap on the number of cruise ships and passengers arriving in the small Alaska community (population 8,300), and what it means for cruise ships and the people of Alaska. And then, a deep dive into Malta. Legendary Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja reflects on the robust and long history and culture of Malta. Hotel owner Mark Weingard, on the evolution of Malta as not just a tourism destination, but high on the wish list of Americans wanting to move there. Andrew Alamango, music researcher and scholar, talks about the preservation of ancient Maltese music, and how this art form gives native Maltese artists a continuing, distinct voice. Historian Stanley Cassar Darien, on the Phoenicians, the Ottomans, Napoleon and the Knights of Malta — all of whom left their enduring mark on Malta and its culture, architecture, language, music and food. All that and more on this edition of Eye on Travel.
