The Essentials

Middle Name Matters When Booking International Flights

When you make a reservation for an airline ticket on an international route, how closely do you pay attention to your name on that reservation?

You might be surprised to learn the rule that applies to your middle name.

As a general rule, your full name on your ticket should match the full name on your passport, and that includes your middle name.

If there’s a problem and you need to change your ticket or your flight, airlines will often require you to cancel your ticket and rebook, often at a much higher fare.

The rule: once an international ticket is issued, no name changes are permitted.

While not having your middle name on the ticket is not necessarily a serious problem, err on the side of caution and always include it every time you make your reservations — and check for spelling mistakes…twice.
