Combating Overtourism: Solutions and Struggles
How are destinations trying to combat — or at least mitigate — overtourism this coming summer?
Last year, Venice imposed a five-euro fee for anyone who couldn’t prove they had a hotel reservation in the city, to try to lower the crowds of day trippers. The result? People paid the fee anyway, and Venice was jammed.
This summer, the proposed solution? Officials have doubled the fee. It probably will have no impact.
In Nepal, so many people want to climb Mt. Everest that officials are now charging a whopping $15,000 fee to make the ascent. Will it make a difference?
Chances are it will just raise more revenue and Mt. Everest — like Venice — may stay crowded. You might want to avoid Venice this summer, or pick another mountain to climb.
