Understanding Hidden Fees When Renting a Car

When you rent a car, you often encounter a parade of extra costs, surcharges, and even something called a “recovery fee.”

Consider this: you might face a tourism commission fee, a concession recovery fee, a customer transportation fee (for the shuttle bus to take you to the car), an airport parking fee, a premium location charge, an energy surcharge, and even a vehicle license recovery fee.

A new lawsuit filed against Avis and Budget claims these are all junk fees that must be properly disclosed with the advertised rental rate.

The suit also asserts that some of these add-on fees should be optional.

Until the litigation is resolved, don’t base your rental decision solely on the published rate.

Ask about each fee and budget accordingly.
