Alternatives to Short-Haul Flights in Europe

A growing number of countries in Europe — in an attempt to lower the number of short-haul flights — are either encouraging airline passengers to take the train, or in some cases, are banning flights of less than an hour to encourage more train travel.

But what about taking ferries as alternate — and more affordable — transportation?

In Alaska, you can buy a $300 airline ticket to travel from Juneau to visit Glacier Bay National Park, or for $70, hop on a ferry.

Cruise ship passengers can pay thousands to travel the North Sea. But for $175, there’s the overnight ferry between Oslo and Copenhagen, which comes with your own private cabin.

Traveling to Turkey? There are tour boats on the Bosphorus that will cost $25 or more, or just take the local ferry, which travels the same route in the Golden Horn of Istanbul for about 50 cents.
