Consider this scenario. Your plane is delayed and you’ve missed your connecting flight or your connecting flight is canceled. You’re now stuck at the airport. Will the airline get you a hotel room? The answer is maybe, and only if the cancellation or delay was the airline’s fault — a missing crew member or mechanical problem.
But if the airline offers you a room or meal voucher, it doesn’t mean that the hotel has any rooms available or that the value on the meal voucher will cover more than a burger and maybe fries.
Vouchers — and voucher amounts — are negotiable.
So before you accept any voucher and leave the airport, make sure the airline confirms you have an actual room, not a slip of paper supposedly entitling you to one. And make sure that the amount of the voucher realistically reflects the cost of a basic meal.
