The Essentials

Lost Checked Bags and No Refunds

Consider this scenario. You pay for a checked bag, but the airline either delays delivering it for hours or loses it entirely. Should your checked bag fee be refunded?

The answer is yes.

In fact, nearly eight years ago, Congress passed a bill saying just that.

But apparently, that isn’t enough to get your money back. The law gave the US Department of Transportation a year to enact a rule requiring the airlines to give your money back if they delayed or lost your bags.

But the DOT has never done it. In the meantime, the top 20 airlines in the world collected more than $33 billion in bag fees last year.

At the same time, passengers are missing nearly $1 million in bag fee refunds, every day. And the airlines are keeping that money.
