I’ve always said there are two kinds of airline bags — carry-on and lost.
And in fairness, while the airlines are actually performing better in terms of lost luggage, they’re misrouting, damaging and losing less bags — there are still thousands of airline bags that are lost each year.
So what are your rights if the airlines lose your bag?
The liability limits have been raised to $3,800 for bags on domestic flights and $1,780 for bags on international flights.
But that doesn’t mean an airline will simply write you a check for $3,800.
That’s the top limit. The airline’s liability is based on the depreciated value of what’s in your bag, as well as many items are excluded — jewelry, cash, antiques.
Before zipping up your bags, take your cell phone camera and photograph everything in it.
If it’s a brand new item, photograph the price tag as well.
And at the airport, take a shot of the bag tag the airline puts on your luggage as well.
