So how much did your airline ticket really cost? Consider this.
A roundtrip coach ticket between the West Coast and Hawaii is listed as $398.
But with taxes and carrier surcharges, the real cost is close to $600.
And that doesn’t include the upsell of a more spacious coach seat. It’s worse on international trips.
From San Francisco to London, the fare is a very attractive $271.
But taxes and a $410 carrier surcharge bumped it to $925.
How about a business class ticket on the same flight? The base fare is $1,488 roundtrip, but with taxes and the surcharge — which is unregulated and can increase at any time — it more than doubles to $3,775.
In a world where transparency doesn’t reign, you need to assume the base fares are nowhere near what you’re going to pay.
