The Essentials

Why Amtrak Trains Are Often Delayed

It’s bad enough that America doesn’t have high speed rail, but what makes things worse is that Amtrak has terrible on-time performance.

Consider this: in the latest quarter, Amtrak trains were delayed a whopping 1,420,000 minutes — only 28% of Amtrak’s trains are on time. The reason is that Amtrak doesn’t own the tracks.

With few exceptions, freight train companies do. And to make matters worse, there are no passenger protections in place to compensate you for these delays.

For the moment, if you’re booking an Amtrak long-haul trip, you might want to bring along two books to read.
