The Essentials

Repositioning Cruises: 2023

If you’re thinking of taking a cruise this year, and have a little extra time, consider a repositioning cruise.

At least two times a year, major cruise lines need to physically move their ships not just to other ports, but to other continents to follow high season.

These cruises, called repositioning trips, are my favorite types of cruises — longer with many days at sea. And they’re not just cruises but crossings.

For example, this November, board the Holland America Nieuw Amsterdam in Vancouver, sail south through the Panama Canal to Fort Lauderdale. The 20-day cruise starts at $1,099. That works out to just $54 a day.

How about a 14-day trip from Barcelona to Fort Lauderdale on Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas? Try $49 a day.

Interested in the South Pacific? Princess Cruises’ Royal Princess also needs to move with a 26-day repositioning cruise from Seattle all the way to Sydney. Cabins start at just $46 a day.
