The Essentials

Block the Middle Seat

When booking an airline seat, we always fear getting stuck in the dreaded middle seat.

And even if we can score an aisle or window seat, there’s no control over who is sitting next to you.

But if necessity is the mother of invention, a number of airlines are now offering — at a relatively reasonable price — the option of blocking out the seat next to you.

Qantas is offering a neighbor-free program for $30 to $65 based on the length of the flight.

Emirates will block the seat next to you for between $55 and $165.

Air New Zealand offers more or less the same deal.

But one caution. You still won’t be able to lie down. At least you won’t be rubbing shoulders with a stranger.
