The Essentials

Want to Retire Outside the U.S.?

More Americans are retiring than ever before, but a growing number are retiring outside the U.S. as many countries are making moving there quite attractive.

Destinations like Malta, Portugal and Uruguay have made the 31st Annual Retirement Index, which rates successful retirement prospects based on housing availability, cost of living, healthcare, and climate, as well as governance, and entertainment.

Other countries that made the list are Spain, France, Ecuador, Colombia, and a historic American retiree favorite: Mexico.

Already, more than one million Americans live there at least a few months each year. And the cost of living there, to give you an example, runs about $1,900 a month, which includes rent, utilities, food, entertainment and healthcare.
