The Essentials

Why Two One-Way Tickets May Be Cheaper Than Round-Trip

In many cases, when you book your flight, you would normally and with the best of intentions, want to book it as a round-trip ticket.

But the next time you do that, before hitting the keystroke to confirm the sale, go back and price out two, one-way tickets, sometimes on two different airlines. The fare differential might surprise you.

Since so many airlines now sell one-way tickets, without the old round-trip restrictions of a required Saturday night stay, you might find the one-way fares change sometimes dramatically between airlines and on different days.

Perhaps your outbound flight is on Delta on a one-way ticket, but your return flight is on JetBlue. And the cost for both one-way tickets could be less than the single round-trip, based on demand for those one-way flights on particular days.
