For years, the best time was one minute after midnight on a Wednesday morning. But that was when airlines had fare wars and you needed to purchase your ticket within 24 hours of booking the flight.

Those days are long over.

Now, the latest study of purchasing patterns and pricing reveals the best time to buy tickets is between 28 and 35 days in advance. And the best day to book? That’s Sunday when you can save an average of about five percent.

The exceptions are holidays and specific dates you know in advance — the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, the Friday before Christmas or July 4th — for those flights, 180 days out will get you the best fares.
