Now that we’re checking back into hotels, my rules for safety and common sense remain.

Try to stay below the sixth floor but never on the ground floor. Why? The ground floor has too much access.

And why not stay above the sixth floor?

There are few fire departments that can effectively fight a fire above that floor.

And how about that in-room safe? It’s more or less ornamental. It’s too easy for others to open.

And the hotel has no legal liability for anything you leave in there if it suddenly goes missing.
