The Essentials

Why I Print My Boarding Pass

When it comes to airline ticketing, you can call me old school, but I still believe in paper documents, even in the world of mobile ticketing.

Yes, mobile ticketing allows you to use your cell phone to contain your boarding pass, but I would argue that it doesn’t necessarily make your flight easier.

By printing up my boarding pass at home, or when I get to the airport, it allows me to much easier hand it to the gate agent, switch seats, or even get an upgrade.

My real fear — and I’ve seen it happen countless times to others at boarding gates — is that the cell phone battery dies, and then there is nothing to scan or the airline’s system shuts down.

And the only backup is that printed boarding pass, which gets you on the plane every time.

So if you’re still embracing the technology of mobile ticketing, do yourself a favor and print a copy of your boarding pass as a backup plan.
