Some capital cities are still growing in number. And those numbers might surprise you. So what are the top five most populated capital cities?

At number five, Dhaka, Bangladesh, has a population of over 19 million people and almost 14,500 people per square mile.

Beijing, China, is fourth at 20 million and is the second largest city in the world’s most populous country, only behind Shanghai.

Checking in at third is Cairo, Egypt, with 21 million residents, and not only is it the largest city in Egypt, buy it is also the largest city in all of Africa!

The silver medal goes to New Delhi, India, which is also the second largest city in the world.

And the world’s largest capital city is Tokyo, Japan. This sprawling metropolis boasts a population of a whopping 37 million people.

So where does our capital rank? Washington D.C. has a population of only about 705,000. It doesn’t even crack the top 100.
