Real ID: October 2021 Deadline

Department of Homeland Security

It’s a law that’s been on the books since 2015 but never implemented. In fact, it’s been delayed every year since then.

But now, Congress has decided on no more delays. As of this October, the Real ID Act will finally be real.

And what it means is that you will need one in order to board a flight in the United States and enter federal buildings.

What is it? It’s designated by a star at the top of your license or ID card.

To get a Real ID, you must go to your local DMV with proof of identity and residency.

Michigan, Vermont, Minnesota, and New York are slight exceptions as these states offer both Real IDs and state enhanced driver’s licenses.

Both of these can be used to travel after the October deadline. While a Real ID is going to be the preferred method of identification moving forward, you can still use another acceptable form of identification such as a passport to travel.
