As more and more of us travel domestically, it’s time to rediscover the actual storytelling of some of our state flags.
Mississippi’s new state flag is just weeks old, replacing the original Mississippi flag that featured a Confederate symbol. It’s red, yellow and blue. It also features a white magnolia, 20 stars to represent its admittance number to the union and a five point gold star in tribute to the state’s Native American tribes.
Symbolism is key on the New Mexico flag as well. The red and yellow colors are a callback to Spanish occupation while the singular red symbol is the sun symbol of the Zia Indians.
The state flag of Hawaii actually contains another flag, the Union Jack, in the left hand corner. It indicates the former control of the United Kingdom over the islands.
And the Washington state flag is unique in that it is the only state flag to feature the face of a president on its flag.
