The Essentials
Most and Least Accessible Cities for the Disabled
Since the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act decades ago, tools that support the disabled community such as wheelchair ramps and handrails have become more common in public places.
However, not all U.S. cities are equal when it comes to wheelchair accessibility. But there are some standout American cities that provide great accessibility.
Seattle, Washington has an abundance of handrails and ramps, truly accessible public transport and wheelchair friendly ferries.
Approximately 90% of all stations on the trains in Boston are wheelchair friendly, and the city has also installed more elevators and updated their platforms in the last few years.
Washington D.C. boasts restaurants with wheelchair friendly seating.
But many U.S. cities are woefully inaccessible.
Winston-Salem, North Carolina is one of the worst cities for wheelchair users with less than three dozen accessible bus routes.
And New York City is one of the least friendly cities for wheelchair users, especially when it comes to transportation. Only 25% of subway stops are accessible to wheelchairs.
