As hotels reopen, beware that some of them will be reintroducing those dreaded resort fees.

You won’t find them listed in the published room rates, and they can range from $10 to $100 a night. The cost can easily blindside you, especially when it covers “services” you either won’t need or won’t use.

It’s the hotel industry’s insidious hidden charge and a way for it to stay officially competitive on room rates but not on what you might actually have to pay.

Most of the time, these resort fees are negotiable up front. So before making a reservation online, call the hotel directly.

And if the hotel doesn’t disclose these fees when you reserved or when you checked in, you have the right to dispute those charges
