Great Destinations Without Any Cars

This may turn out to be the summer of the great American road trip, but you might also want to consider going to where there aren’t any cars at all.

There’s Mackinac Island in Michigan, where travel is permitted only by foot, bicycle, or horse-drawn carriage.

And in Daufuskie Island, in South Carolina, you won’t find a highway, sidewalk, or even a town hall. But there are golf cart rentals and there’s even a distillery.

And on Fire Island in New York, the only area accessible by car is the state park and lighthouse on the west edge — otherwise, you’ll have to travel by boat, ferry or bike to the other parts of the island, where there are 17 car-free communities.

What’s the best part about car-free destinations? There’s no auto pollution, no noise, no road rage, and no drunk drivers.
