EMAIL:  Lynda McGrath

I am one f the passengers of the Ruby Princess who came down with the Covid virus from the ship.  I understand Australia is investigating them for lying about the virus being on board.  Can you find out more?

Lynda McGrath

Peter Says: Hi Lynda, I hope you have made a full recovery and sending all my best thoughts your way. Currently, Australia has launched a criminal investigation regarding Princess Ships and the allegation that the cruise line misled officials in Australia about the size and extent of the Covid-19 situation on board their ships and in allowing passengers to disembark in Sydney. As soon as I know more, you’ll be hearing about it on my radio show and on my website. And in the meantime, hang in there!

Hello, Peter. Just watched your video…thank you for fighting the fight.

My husband and I were scheduled to depart Tuesday, April 21st rom Chicago (ORD) to Reykjavik, Iceland.

We have travel insurance….CSA Travel Protection/Generali Global. We have filed a claim. There has been no response to date regarding a refund of $657.38.

Both my husband and I are COVID 19 positive….I have bilateral pneumonia.  Any suggestions to help us would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Carin Vittorio

Peter Says: Carin, thanks for your email and apologies for my late response. Did you hear back from CSA or Iceland Air? Please update me and thanks, Peter.

Hi Peter…I listen to you all the time on WGN. So we bought tickets on Expedia to fly to Calgary in Mid July for a week. We were to fly in on United and fly home on American.

We are considering cancelling and using the credit to fly somewhere in US during that time.  (Too many unknowns with flying out of country right now.)

My question is this. If we fly to say Colorado and the ticket pp is less than what we paid to fly to Calgary do they still credit us the rest? Also,  the email only mentions United, will Expedia also send us a credit for American?

Thanks for your help.

Shellise Janus

Peter Says: If United gives you a voucher it’s for a dollar amount, and let’s say the voucher is for $400 and you change it for a $300 ticket, you’ll the get a second voucher for the difference of $100.

Today is the 41 Yahrzei of Lenny’s death on The crash of flight 191.

Monday is the actual day of the crash.

The one thing that always bothered me is that both, Mother and Dad and Lenny’s crashes was because of human error. Maintenance of the tail and maintenance of an engine

Stan

Peter Says: Stan, always great to hear from you, but of course that is tempered by the sadness of this anniversary, a story that you and I know very very well. Sending all best thoughts your way

EMAIL: Neil Ticktin

Hi Peter,

Nice piece this morning on CBS Sunday Morning about travel.  I would like to encourage you, or someone else at CBS to take a look at something that no one is covering — one of the largest pieces of our economy, that happens to also be the biggest client/customer of the travel industry.  This industry represents close to 4% of US employment (directly and indirectly), and prior to COVID-19, employed about 3x the number of people in the airline industry.  Prior to the pandemic, there were over 5000 meetings/events per day in the U.S. … every day.

The industry?  Live events. I’m not talking about sports or concerts. I’m talking about meetings, seminars, conferences and symposiums.  The industry that feeds the airlines, hotels, and all kinds of travel.  And, because events are mostly created by small business, it’s completely uncovered by the news media.

This industry started its impact before any other – around mid-February in the U.S.  And, at this point, there’s little chance any real volume of events will restart until 2021.  There are very very few industries that outsize employment created the events industry – things like government (~20%), all of manufacturing combined (~12%), and restaurants (~10%).  Almost

Below are additional details – and I encourage you to look into covering.  If you want the travel industry to recover, the event/meeting industry must happen first.

I’m happy to answer any questions – whether on camera, or as background.  But, please do cover it – or encourage someone else at CBS to.

Best regards,

Neil Ticktin

Peter Says: Neil, thanks for this. We actually do cover this, multiple times on my national CBS radio show, which airs each Saturday from 10a-1p Eastern time. If you can’t find a local station in your city, then please go to our website petergreenberg.com, look for the “Listen” tab and you can listen to the live stream on Saturdays as well.

Dear Peter,

THANK YOU.  I heard your latest travel report, looked up the DOT statement, and called LOT airlines on behalf of my clients who were traveling in April.  The airline had offered a voucherby mail and then again on the phone, but I read them the DOT statement and they immediately issued a full refund!

It’s so hard to keep up; I really appreciate your newsletters and updates.  Even though I’m not making any money, I SOUND like I know what I’m talking about with clients because you’re passing along clear and useful information.

Stay healthy and thanks again.

Hi Mr. Greenberg,

I thoroughly enjoyed your presentation when you spoke at the Montgomery Woman’s club Town Hall Series in Cincinnati.

I am seeking advice concerning a 10 day Oceania cruise that was due to leave Miami on March 11th. My husband and I were to travel with another “senior” couple to take a relaxing Caribbean cruise in which we probably would not even leave the ship since we had done the Caribbean several times before. Initially we (foolishly) thought we would take several days and just drive to Miami and park at the port, after coming to our senses we decided to fly. We had booked the cruise through USAA travel (my husband being retired military) and everything was fine until the virus started infecting people in Miami which made it a bit scary for us. Since I had take on the role of travel agent I went online to Priceline on Dec. 30,2019 and booked direct flights from CVG on AA departing on 3/11 and returning on Frontier direct from MIA to CVG on 3/21. When I could finally get through to Oceania they said I had to go through USAA which I understood. When I contacted USAA travel on Monday 3/9 they cancelled our cruise but I was told that there would be a charge of $1900.00 cancellation fee per cabin for the travel agency. Then I tried to get in touch with the airlines and when I could finally get through to Frontier, I was told that we could rebook with no fee for 90 days (up until June 6) and travel had to be completed by 11/9/2020. I think American had a similar policy. Worrying about our ages I opted for travel insurance through Allianz for the air travel.

After reading your email responses I assume that the travel insurance is a complete loss.

I apologize for this “Epistle” but I saw where you had asked others for more info. Of course we would love to have the airfare refunded. We will plan to use our credit with Oceania for another cruise probably Spain/Portugal although we have not had  contact from Oceania at this point. My only heartburn is with USAA travel, I think $1900.00 per cabin cancellation fee is exorbitant.

I apologize for the length of this email but would love to hear what you think of our situation and any advice you might offer.

Sincerely,
Bonita Genetti

Peter Says: Bonita, thanks so much for your email, and apologies for my late response. I’ve been inundated with emails and still digging out! Can you get back to me and update me on your situation? Let me know and thanks, Peter.

Peter Says: Fran, Road Scholar has informed me that they are, in fact, issuing refunds. So please check with them again.

EMAIL: Jalane Kirkpatrick

Hi

We have flights booked with United to Hawaii in June. How long should we wait to see if they cancel?

Thank you

Jalane Kirkpatrick

Peter Says: Jalane, if United hasn’t canceled already, they should soon. So please wait until they cancel first.

EMAIL: Karin Rose

Aer Lingus cancelled our flight and agreed to provide us with a refund on 3/23 and as of yet have not received a refund, 4/14.  I have spoken to them and they said they are working on it.

Please advise.

Karin Rose

Peter Says: Karin, have you received your refund yet?

EMAIL: Anthony Scafati

Peter,

Are Copa airlines providing refunds or vouchers?  they don’t have flights from Boston to sjo now. Should they provide a refund in this situation. When I bought it said non refundable?

Thank you,
Anthony

Peter Says: If the airline canceled their flights first, the answer is yes, even if you bought a nonrefundable ticket.

EMAIL: Camille McCoy

Hello Peter,

Thank you for all your efforts in getting us answers to so many travel questions.

I booked flights with ASAP Tickets on American Airlines for March 26th to Europe. American cancelled the flights and refunded ASAP tickets. ASAP has issued a credit to us and we asked for a refund. This refund is not happening and I wonder if I have any other rights to the refund. I used a Visa card through my Credit Union and I tried to initiate a dispute but they told me to get my money from ASAP.  I feel stuck 🙁

Any advice on what I can do?

Camille McCoy

Peter Says: As long as American cancelled first, you are absolutely entitled to a refund. Call AA back and demand it. And let me know what happens!

EMAIL: Ann Toback

HI Peter! My friend turned me on to you recently and I just read you last article, that said if anyone needed help to contact you. So I had a flight next week to Sarasota on American Airlines. When I called to ask if I would have a year to use my credit (I have a time share I was supposed to be renting so I will rent it next April), they said I bought the ticket in December and I can only get Credit till then. This is American Airlines and that doesn’t seem right.  I called twice. I have other flights at the end of June to Greece that I will have to deal with.  Can you advise?

Thank you.
Ann Toback

Peter Says: Ann, you are correct… It ISN’T right. you should have that credit voucher forgone year from the time the airline canceled the flight, not when you first purchased it. Go back to them (or write them directly) and copy me, ok?

EMAIL: Rudi Steele

Dear Peter,

Greetings from a very cold (upper 30’sF) Dallas – crazy weather.

I hope all is well with you and you are staying safe at your NYC abode.

Thought to send you below from LH – DL, AA and other US carriers are making refunds, but most foreign airlines refuse and are stalling.
Just like years ago when the Swiss government refused to support their national airline any further and from there evolved Swiss,
now owned by LH group. Travelex and other insurance companies are not covering Covid-19, unless one took out cancel for any reason, which most of
the travelers refused to do, because of the vey high premium.

Wonder if the German government will come to the rescue of LH and in addition, I personally think that the new Berlin airport opening will be delayed even further.

Yes we will get though this eventually and I now wonder if Matthew will want to go ahead with Virtuoso Travel Week Las  Vegas in August.

Sad times. Stay safe.

Warm regards,

Rudi

Peter Says: Rudi, thanks so much for your email and apologies for my late response: I’m inundated with emails and just starting to dig out. Sorry to miss you at Virtuoso this year, but we WILL see each other soon! All the best, Peter.
