100th Anniversary of 18th Amendment — Speakeasies to Know About

In case you were hoping to celebrate, this year marks the 100th anniversary of the 18th amendment — also known as the law that started prohibition of course, that really didn’t stop people from drinking alcohol.

That’s why speakeasies were formed. Nowadays, and in this centennial year, there are some new speakeasies.

You might even need a password to get in. If you walk through the doors of Blind Barber in New York, Philadelphia, or Los Angeles — you’ll see an unassuming barbershop. But every night, a door at the back of the barbershop leads you into a bar.

In Austin, Texas there is Midnight Cowboy — a former brothel turned speakeasy. And you’ve got to ring a buzzer for entry.

And in Orlando, Florida – there is Hanson’s Shoe Repair, where a password is required for entrance and is updated daily. But where? Well we are in the 21st century so you’ll find it on the bar’s Twitter account.
