Photos of the Week — Quarantine Discovery From Fort Worth, Texas

Last week, I shared my own quarantine discovery. So send me a photo of your neighborhood, and share your unexpected discoveries. Email me at photocontest@petergreenberg.com.

This week’s discovery comes from McLaren in Fort Worth, Texas.

My quarantine discovery was the now-abandoned LaGrave Field, former home of Fort Worth’s minor league baseball team — the Fort Worth Cats. My friends and I were walking along the Trinity River Trails when they remembered the old Cats stadium was right around where we were walking. It turned out to be just up the embankment from the trail! There were no fences or warnings so we deemed it safe to enter.
As a native Californian who came to the Fort for college five years ago, I had no idea we had even had a baseball team here. As a history major, I had to know more! In short, the Cats played in Fort Worth from 2002-2014 and were league champs from 2005-2007. They ceased to exist in 2015 after property disputes over the land LaGrave sits on and the disbandment of their league, the ULB.

The stadium has fallen into disrepair and is covered in graffiti and full of debris. It’s almost eerie – feels almost apocalyptic! – seeing all the empty seats and the overgrown grass of the infield. Plants have grown up in between the bleachers. Concession signs for frozen margaritas and cotton candy await the return of fans long gone. I could tell this had once been a great place to spend a summer afternoon with a hot dog in one hand, a beer in the other, and a view of downtown Fort Worth beyond first base.
Through “Save LaGrave” and other organizations, there’s talk of reviving the field and bringing baseball back to Fort Worth by 2021. I for one would love to see this field restored to its former glory and have the opportunity to cheer on the Cats!
