The Essentials

States With the Fastest Speed Limits

If you’re taking a road trip, one of the first things you discover is the disparity in speed limits between states.

Overseas, I used to dream about driving on Germany’s Autobahn — the legendary highway with no speed limit.

And I remember the years when the state of Nevada had no speed limit. And in recent years, the average speed limit on many U.S. highways has steadily been relaxed.

And you might find yourself attracted to individual states that have addressed your need for speed. So which state allows you to drive fastest? It’s Texas with an average posted speed limit of 78.3 miles per hour (and some roads up to 85 mph).

Idaho comes in second at 76.7 mph.

But if you’re driving in Alaska, you’d better slow down. The average speed limit is just 55 mph
