Airfare for Bereavement: What Airlines Offer

What happens when a loved one dies and you suddenly have to fly to get to the funeral or memorial service?

For many years, just about every airline offered a bereavement or compassion fare. More and more of those have evaporated in recent years, but there are still five airlines that offer these fares.

For immediate family members, Alaska Airlines has a 10% discount within seven days of travel for its mileage plan members.

Delta’s rates vary and are subject to availability when booking for SkyMiles members.

Air Canada offers its bereavement fare for immediate family members within 10 days of booking.

WestJet’s bereavement policy allows for travel up to 14 days after booking.

And Lufthansa offers bereavement rates abroad for flights starting in the U.S. or Canada.

But here’s one word of advice. In many cases, you can find a discount fare online that is actually cheaper than the bereavement fare.
