The Essentials

Double Check Your Sunscreen Label

Be sure and stock up on some zinc oxide if you’re traveling near a coral reef.

Many popular destinations are now banning the sale of sunscreens that contain oxybenzone, octinoxate, and other non-biodegradable chemicals because of the bleaching and destructive effects on coral reefs.

Hawaii, Key West in Florida, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Palau in Micronesia, and some destinations in Mexico have banned sunscreens altogether that include these harmful ingredients.

So protect your skin in the reefs, and don’t violate the law when you travel next time. Instead, choose a natural sunscreen for your trip.
