Everywhere I travel, I try to walk my destination. It’s often the best way to see a new city, town or village and not just because of the things you view but the people you meet. That’s especially true overseas.
But in the United States, we have some of the least walkable cities. In the most recent study, American cities were ranked on walkability with researchers looking at the distance that residents of these cities have to walk to make it to parks, theaters, schools, business centers and other popular or necessary destinations.
Coming in at number three as America’s least walkable city is Winston-Salem in North Carolina. With its metro area of 132 square miles, a car is a must.
Number two is Chesapeake in Virginia.
Topping the list as the least walkable city in the U.S. is Fayetteville in North Carolina. There are almost no bike lanes, and almost all errands in Fayetteville require driving.
On the other hand, the most walkable cities in the U.S. are New York City, San Francisco and Boston.
