Peter Greenberg Worldwide—Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort, Oahu, Hawaii—September 9, 2017

Locations in this article:  Honolulu, HI

This week, Peter Greenberg Worldwide broadcasts from the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort in Honolulu, right on the beach at Waikiki.

Joining Peter will be Chris Fitch, Author of Atlas of Untamed Places, who talks about his choices of unusual destinations in the “untamed” world. There are some real surprises here. Henry Kapono, local hero vocalist and composer, stops by to discuss the history of Hawaiian music, and how that has shaped his musical style. He also plays one of his hit songs, “Home in the Islands.”

Kaipo Ho, Director of Cultural Experiences for Outrigger Enterprises, talks about Waikiki’s heritage and the passion for preserving Hawaiian culture. He’ll discuss the island’s past failings to do this in “appropriate” ways, which caused the area to lose some of its identity. He also talks about Outrigger’s attempts to be the genuine caregiver of the local culture.

Kelly Hoen, Area General Manager at Outrigger Hotels and Resorts, discusses Airbnb’s recent impact on the hotel industry. She also talks about how travelers pursue their desire for authenticity and connection in a vacation destination and what Hawaii needs to do to fulfill that desire. There’s all of this and more as Peter Greenberg Worldwide broadcasts from Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort in Honolulu as the resort celebrates its 50th anniversary.
