Travel Tip: What You Should Know About Fish Fraud

Locations in this article:  Los Angeles, CA

If you like going to seafood restaurants when you travel, consider yourself warned.

There may be something fishy with your fish.

There’s growing evidence that much of the sushi served at many restaurants is mislabeled.

In one Los Angeles study done for Conservation Biology, it was discovered that more than half of the fish served at prominent Los Angeles restaurants did not match the species mentioned on the menu.

The problem appears to be nationwide.

What are the three most mislabeled fish? Halibut, Yellowtail, and Red Snapper.

Some mislabeled fish, such as Tuna, is actually Escolar.

Red Snapper is most often Pacific Mackerel.

In many cases, Halibut turns out to be Olive Flounder.

In many restaurants, the mislabeling could be due to a sourcing problem that’s created nothing less than fish fraud.

So what can you do?

For starters, ask your sushi restaurant to give you the name of its distributor.

Then ask if they’ve delivered any Escolar, Mackerel, or Olive Flounder to that establishment.
