Travel Tip: How Airlines are Making an Effort to Go Green

planeEveryone talks about carbon footprints when we travel, but what are the airlines really doing about it?

A number of carriers are trying biofuel.

Virgin Atlantic, Air France, KLM, and Finnair are trying alternative fuels—and they work.

But the price remains too high for airlines to make a complete fuel changeover.

In the meantime, more airlines are retrofitting winglets to their planes.

These small upright wing extensions reduce drag, save fuel, and cut emissions.

Alaska Airlines says that by putting winglets on its 737s it was able to save 600,000 gallons of fuel last year.

Plus, some airlines are lightening the load.

By replacing the pilots’ paper flight manuals with iPads, American Airlines saved 400,000 gallons of fuel last year.
