The recent killing of Cecil the lion by the American dentist in Zimbabwe has had an effect on the world of travel.

One of the things it has done is shine a light on the role that some airlines play in transporting these trophy kills in their cargo holds.

The death of Cecil may, in fact, have altered airline policy.

Delta Air Lines has now changed its rules about transporting these carcasses. Air France, Iberia, Singapore Airlines, and Qantas are also banning the transport of these trophy kills.

The ban was initiated by South African Airways in April. Then Lufthansa, British Airways, United Airlines, and Emirates joined the list.

This applies to elephants, rhinos, lions, and tigers carried as cargo.

What prompted the new rules? Airline employees themselves went to management with their concerns.

Will these new rules eliminate trophy hunting? Probably not. But it’s a powerful statement.
