Travel Tip: More Airlines Add Checked Bag Fees

suitcaseJetBlue has announced that it’s now charging for checked bags, which marks the end of an era. Here’s what’s happening in the world of airline nickel-and-diming.

JetBlue charges $20 to check a bag online, and $25 if you pay at the ticket counter.

Passengers on pricier Blue Plus and Blue Flex fares can still check the first bag for free.

Air Canada, which was also a late adopter, started charging for checked bags last fall. This summer, it began cracking down on passengers sneaking oversized carry-on bags onto planes.

That leaves Southwest as the last holdout. It still allows the first two bags for free—for now.

This fee isn’t going away any time soon. In 2014, U.S. airlines raked in $3.5 billion in checked bag fees.

It allows airlines to advertise seemingly lower rates, and then nail you upon check in.
