You may have heard the news: Amazon is getting into the travel business. It was only a matter of time, but how does it measure up to the competition?
Online travel sellers are known as OTAs, or Online Travel Agencies. These include sites like Orbitz, Expedia, and Priceline.
Amazon Destinations recently launched with hotel bookings in New York, Los Angeles, and Seattle, mostly focusing on destinations that are within driving distances of those cities.
Right now, it’s part of the existing Amazon Local page, which offers daily deals on shopping, dining, and entertainment.
It’s not sizable enough to compete with the big guys, which offer worldwide hotels, airline tickets, car rentals, and vacation packages, as well as last-minute flash sales.
But if history is any indication, Amazon is starting small and will scale up to reach bigger targets. Rumor has it that it’s also working on user-generated reviews, which could eventually put it in the same realm as TripAdvisor.
So keeping watching this space for more news to come.
