Travel Tip: Self Bag Tagging

Locations in this article:  Amsterdam, Netherlands Dublin, Ireland

You’ve heard of airlines that are testing out self-boarding kiosks, and now there’s actually self-bag tagging. Will there be ANY staff left in the airport in the future?

Self-bag tagging has already been in place for years abroad. We’ve already seen it in European airports like Amsterdam, Dublin and Zurich, as well as some Canadian airports from Calgary to Vancouver.

Individual airlines have also adopted this practice, including Air New Zealand, Virgin Atlantic and WestJet. The idea is you can print and attach your own luggage tag from a self-service kiosk, instead of waiting in line at the counter.

Big surprise here, a recent survey showed that more than 75 airports surveyed showed interest in implementing self-tagging and other ways to improve bag drop offs.

Now in most cases, this kind of system an actually be really effective, and who doesn’t want to skip the line? But the problems arise when…well, there are problems and there’s no human being to deal with it. All these self-service options will ultimately mean fewer airport staff, and that, boys and girls, is when we get into trouble.
