Along with the self-recognition of success, however, runs a vein of ulterior recognition. “We are not given to complaining because, creative as we are, we usually solve our problems ourselves,” de Caluwe said. “But there are limits to our creativity and our flexibility.”

Some countries have simply reached these limits. Greece has had to endure many setbacks to its cultural landmarks and programs. Entire halls of the National Archaeological Museum of Athens are closed to visitors, as is the museum’s shop on certain Sundays and Mondays, due to the inability to hire for security and sales positions. The Archaelogical site of Phaistos has also been affected and is closing at noon for the summer due to a lack of seasonal staff.

“The majority of the museums and sites have not hired seasonal personnel, so they operate from 08:30-15:00 or 09:00-16:00,” said Aliki Hamosfakidou of Dophin Hellas, a travel company in Athens. “Still there are sites and museums that have extended hours, including the Acropolis, the New Museum of the Acropolis, Epidaurus, the Benaki Museum and a few more. It is a good idea to for people traveling to Greece to check out the opening hours of the sites and museums they want to visit in order to make the most of their stay.”
