3. Selexyz Dominicanen in Maastricht, Holland
If there were an award for the best repurposed building Selexyz Dominicanen would be the winner. This bookstore is housed in a 13th-century Gothic cathedral that was refashioned into a bookstore in 2006, but still preserves the look at feel of the Dominican friary it once functioned as. You can climb to the uppermost stacks for a birds-eye view of the ceiling frescoes and columns. Genres run the gamut from literature to cookbooks to history to arts to computers, with a large English-language book section.
