Travel Tip: 2012 Celestial Events
Listen up, stargazers. Venus is set to pass between the sun and earth between June 5 and 6 and this is a big event that won’t happen again until 2117.
Viewing the Transit of Venus isn’t about using the most expensive equipment—it’s about where you position yourself.
One of the best places to see celestial events is from a designated Dark Sky Park.
Headlands Dark Sky Park in Emmet County, Michigan, for example, had to undergo a 3-year process to get its designation. Most of the 600-acre park is protected from development, and nearby private owners also choose to keep the area free from light pollution.
The Big Island of Hawaii is the most eastern location in North America where the entire transit will be visible.
The Mauna Kea Observatory in Hawaii is setting up solar filtered telescopes and will display a webcast of the transit. They’ll also have stations on other parts of the island where the view is just as clear.
There are plenty of other celestial gatherings all over the country. My advice: go through an astronomy society or observatory so you can view this phenomenon safely with expert guides.
